Bringing a new puppy home is an exciting milestone! Because Vizslas are a highly intelligent and energetic breed, setting up your home properly before your puppy arrives is key to a smooth transition.

To help our Happy Hunter families prepare, we’ve put together a quick checklist for welcoming your new Hungarian Pointer :

1. Create a "Safe Zone"

Vizslas are curious and love to chew when they are young. Set up a designated puppy zone using a crate and an exercise pen. This gives your puppy a safe, comfortable place to retreat to when they are tired and keeps them out of trouble when you can't actively supervise.

2. Stock Up on the Right Toys

As a versatile hunting breed, Vizslas have strong instincts to carry things in their mouths. Provide plenty of high-quality, durable chew toys and plush toys they can carry around. Puzzle toys and snuffle mats are also excellent for tiring out their sharp minds.

3. Plan Your Exercise Routine

A tired Vizsla is a good Vizsla! While a young puppy’s bones are still developing (meaning no forced, long-distance running just yet), you’ll want to plan for daily play sessions, short walks, and mental training. As they grow, they will become the perfect running, hiking, or swimming partners.

4. Find a Positive Reinforcement Trainer

Vizslas are incredibly smart but also highly sensitive. They do not respond well to harsh training methods. Look for a local trainer in your area who uses positive reinforcement. Starting puppy obedience classes early is a great way to socialize your dog and build a lifelong bond.

5. Training Routine that works best for both of you

Vizslas are super fun and smart. They respond very well to consistency, love and care. Training routine is key using the KISS method, but also work for the pup. Food is reward in itself, so take that morning breakfast as 5 min of short fun training to feed while teaching no more than 3 tricks or behavior reinforcement at a time. Do it gradually, then when mastered, transpose the task or trick in another environment...

We are always here to support our puppy families. If you have questions about preparing for your new arrival, don't hesitate to reach out!
